Ireland may become part of the United States E-3 visa program, designed for Australian nationals in speciality occupation positions in the US.
Joining the US’ E-3 visa program may be possible for Irish nationals, following the recent proposal of two US congressmen that reintroduced bipartisan legislation to include Ireland in this scheme, VisaGuide.World reports.
The bill has been introduced by Congressman Richard Neal of Massachusetts and Congressman Mike Kelly of Pennsylvania.
Two bills have been presented to the House of Representatives within a week in order to change the current rules. According to local media reports, the bills are being supported by a total of four congressmen. If approved, about 5,000 US visas would be granted to nationals from Ireland.
According to Congressman Kelly, with generations of Irish Americans contributing to the US, including helping to build and also shape Pennsylvania, it is important that the US continues to reaffirm “the strong relationship between our people and countries.”
Recognizing the numerous contributions Irish Americans have made to the educational, political, and cultural life of America, it is important that we honor their many contributions and continue to support the unique relationship between our shared history and people.
Through a statement, Congressman Neal stressed that for the last 100 years, the US and Ireland have held strong relationships.
Neal has said that E-3 visas, combined with these reciprocal agreements, would further tighten that relationship, providing the welcome as well as long overdue movement of citizens from Ireland and the US in both directions.
According to him, the legislation reaffirms the connection between the US and Ireland, thus creating significant opportunities for these two nations.
Over 4,000 Approvals for US E-3 Visa Program in 2023
The figures from VisaGrader reveal that in 2023, a total of 4,434 E-3 visas were approved, while 98 visas were refused.
The US E-3 visa program, often known as the golden ticket of US immigration, was designed in 2005 in order to permit Australians in speciality occupation positions to work in the United States. At that time, 10,500 visas were created, however, just about half have been used.
The definition of ‘speciality occupation’ is one that requires: A theoretical and practical application of a body of specialized knowledge; and the attainment of a bachelor’s or higher degree in the specific speciality (or its equivalent) as a minimum for entry into the occupation in the United States.
In order to qualify, candidates are required to hold a university degree or equivalent credentials and also prove they have an employment offer in the US.
