Mexico Implements New Visitor Visa Requirement for Airport Transits

Travelers planning to transit through Mexico’s airport will now be subject to additional requirements after the country’s government has introduced visitor visas.

Through a statement, the Mexican Embassy in Havana indicates that the measure will include all internationals transiting at Mexican airports, VisaGuide.World reports.

However, there will be some exemptions applied when it comes to this decision. The Embassy in Havana has stressed that permanent residents of visa-free countries such as Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, the Schengen Zone, and members of the Pacific Alliance, as well as those from Japan, will not be required to have visitor visas.

According to the statement, nationals who require a visa and plan to travel through Mexico’s airports “must hold a visitor visa without permission to carry out paid activities (tourism), regardless of the duration of your airport transit.”

The new changes will become effective starting from October 22 this year. The Embassy noted that the latest requirements must be met to board any flight from that date.

The decision is expected to affect a large number of Cubans who use a connecting flight in order to reach Nicaragua with a stopover in the Mexican city of Merida.

Authorities in Mexico have suspended air permits for those who unlawfully reached the country in order to immigrate to the United States to fly to their interviews, according to a report from the Cleveland American.

A large number of Cubans are living in an unlawful way in Mexico. Recently, the President of Mexico, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, said that about 10,000 migrants per day are attempting to reach the US, blaming the US economy sanctions on countries like Cuba for the influx, according to a report from AP.

The President also emphasized that the number of migrants attempting to reach the US through Mexico’s northern border was partly due to nearly 6,000 migrants per day crossing into Mexico from Guatemala in the past week.

A Mexico Tourist Visa is required for foreigners subject to visas when planning to reach the country. Such a visa is required for tourism, visits, business, cultural/sports events, or any other similar purpose that does not require a person to take up paid employment.

Through the Mexico tourist card required before reaching Mexico, it is revealed the number of days that foreigners are eligible to stay legally in this country, and they are required to depart before those days are up.
