Peru to Launch Digital Nomad Visa

Key Takeaways

  • Peru unfolded plans to launch the Digital Nomad Visa (DNV).
  • The visa will allow remote workers to stay for one year with the possibility of renewal.
  • DNV came as part of efforts to enhance immigration control and national security.

Remote workers will soon be eligible to head to Peru for work purposes after the country’s government has introduced a new immigration proposal to implement the Digital Nomad Visa (DNV).

Authorities in this country have confirmed that the new legislation is an update of the current foreign immigration law, Legislative Decree No. 1582. The decree became effective on November 15; however, details on the matter have yet not been provided, VisaGuide.World reports.

The Digital Nomad visa is expected to be valid for a period of one year and can be renewable. The visas will be issued by the National Superintendence of Migration.

Holders of the DNV will not be eligible to perform local renumerated activities in this county. The eligibility conditions and other details related to this visa have still not been published.

The decision came as part of efforts to strengthen the current immigration system and protect the country’s security, allowing legal entry into the country of internationals.

In order to benefit from this scheme, internationals are required to meet some of the following conditions:

  • Valid passport– confirm the validity of their passport
  • Work remotely– Applicants should engage in remote employment with a company established in other countries or a freelancer working with clients located abroad.
  • Minimum Income Requirement– The country will enforce a minimum income requirement; however, the amount has not been announced yet
  • Health Insurance– The country is expected to require international health insurance in order to cover the applicants during their stay.

The decision places Peru on the list of other 50 countries that already offer such a visa and also on the list of South American countries that offer such programs, such as Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Argentina, and Uruguay.

The Digital Nomad Visa gives internationals the opportunity to stay legally in countries that offer such programs and work remotely for businesses or clients located outside the country.

Peru is expected to attract a large number of digital nomads due to the low cost of living in comparison to several other countries. Besides, affordable accommodation as well as reasonably priced services make this country an attractive option for those interested in remote work.

In addition, the country is also known for the iconic Machu Picchu, which is included in the UNESCO World Heritage Site and brings many visitors to the country each year.

At present, internationals are eligible to visit Peru through different kinds of visas, depending on the purpose of their visit.
