Who Qualifies for the Maltese Digital Nomad Visa?
You can apply for the Malta digital nomad visa if you meet the criteria below:
- You are an adult (+18).
- You can work remotely using telecommunications.
- You are a third-country national (non-EU/EEA and non-Swiss nationals).
- You have a work contract with a foreign employer (if employed).
- You conduct business activities with a company registered outside of Malta and are a partner or shareholder (if self-employed).
- You have a work contract with clients from outside of Malta (if freelancer).
How to Apply for the Malta Digital Nomad Visa?
You have to apply for Malta’s digital nomad visa online, through the Residency Malta Agency portal. During the application process, you also have to attach electronic copies of the required documents.
After Submission
The officer of Nomad Client Relations and Compliance will check if all required documents are attached and you will receive instructions on how to proceed with payment. Once you complete the payment, the application will be processed and you will wait for an answer.
If Your Application is Successful
You will be granted a Letter of Approval in Principle. You will have 30 days to submit proof of accommodation in Malta and a valid health insurance policy once you receive your Letter of Approval in Principle.
After Arrival
Upon arriving in Malta, you are required to notify Residency Malta via email and set up an appointment to have your biometrics taken.
Then, after 3 or 4 weeks you can go to one of the offices of Residency Malta to receive your residence card (you will be notified via email).
What Documents Are Required to Apply for the Malta Digital Nomad Visa?
To apply for the Malta digital nomad visa, you’ll have to submit the following documents:
- Submit a copy of all pages of your passport, including blank pages. All copies should be submitted as one document in PDF format.
- Cover letter. A signed and written statement stating the reason you are moving to Malta and why you are applying for the Nomad Residence Permit.
- Curriculum Vitae (CV). A detailed document highlighting your professional and academic history.
- Proof of financial funds. Provide bank statements for the last 3 months to prove that you have enough money to support yourself during your stay in Malta.
- Police certificate. This is a document you can receive from the police department in your city to show that you do not have any criminal charges.
- Health insurance. Your health insurance policy should be valid for Malta and EU countries.
- Proof of accommodation. A document such as lease or rental agreement to show that you have found a place to stay in Malta.
- If you are employed:
- Work contract that states your obligations to the employer, work duties and the work you will perform remotely.
- Bank statement of the previous 3 months.
- If you are a business owner:
- Bank statement of the previous 3 months.
- Certificate of Incorporation and Share Register.
- If you are a freelancer:
- Work contract with your clients that states your work duties and payment.
- Bank statement of the previous 3 months.
- Marriage certificate. In case your spouse is part of the application.
- De Facto partnership. If you are unmarried but in a stable relationship for more than two consecutive years. You can submit:
- Utility bills.
- Lease agreements.
- Dated photographs, etc.
- Birth certificate. If your children will be accompanying you.
- Consent forms. If the dependent is a minor, you need to provide a consent form signed by both parents.
How Much Does the Malta Digital Nomad Visa Cost?
You will be required to pay a fee of €300 (application fee) via bank transfer to the Residency Malta Agency. And if you want to add any additional family members, you will have to pay an additional fee of €300 per person.
Another fee of €27.50 is also required to obtain the residency card. This amount is paid in person at the offices of Residency Malta.
The fee is non-refundable and payment can be made by card only.
What Is the Minimum Financial Requirement?
As of April 1, 2024, you must earn a minimum gross income of €42,000/year to apply for the Malta digital nomad visa.
Can I Include My Family Members in My Application?
You can include the following family members in your digital nomad visa application:
- Your spouse.
- Minor children.
- Adult unmarried children who are dependent on you.
- Adult children who cannot take care of themselves due to a medical condition or disability.
Can I Include Them After Obtaining My Digital Nomad Visa?
Unfortunately, you can’t add your family members after you receive your digital nomad visa (newborn babies make an exception). However, you can add them when you apply for a visa renewal.
Can My Digital Nomad Visa Be Revoked?
The Residency Malta can revoke your digital nomad visa application if they receive any negative information about you or your dependents or if you violate one or more of the eligibility criteria.
Do I Need to Pay Taxes as a Digital Nomad in Malta?
Digital nomads in Malta do not pay income tax in the first 12 months of residence. After that, they will be charged at a rate of 10% income tax on qualifying income from authorized work. However, digital nomads who have already paid 10% tax in another country, do not need to pay again in Malta on the same income.
