The government of New Zealand has announced a new residence pathway for some holders of Special Ukraine visas.
The decision has been confirmed by Immigration Minister Andrew Little, VisaGuide.World reports.
“Many of those who sought safety here in New Zealand would never have anticipated being here long term, but as the war continues, we have a humanitarian obligation to provide certainty to them,” the Minister said.
He said that the government would attempt to facilitate as much as possible the application process for the residence pathway.
While stressing that New Zealand is a peaceful country, Minister Little said that the country is enriched by Ukrainian citizens wishing to make New Zealand their permanent home.
“We know that some have come here, quite like being here, want some certainty … so this [residency pathway] will give them certainty so they can put down their roots,” he noted.
Local media reports have said that the residence pathway will be available to Special Ukraine Visa holders in cases when the applicant was granted a Special Ukraine Visa and traveled to this country before March 15, 2024.
Foreign Affairs Minister Nanaia Mahuta said that the government’s continuous support of Ukraine and its people demonstrates New Zealand’s enduring support for a rules-based international system.
“The conflict in Ukraine resonates deeply with us all. In launching this residence pathway, we are honoring our responsibility as global citizens, weaving together the threads of compassion, solidarity, and kaitiakitanga, affirming our commitment to support those affected,” Mahuta said.
The Special Ukraine Visa first opened for applications for a period of 12 months from March 15, last year, and came as a response from New Zealand authorities to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Soon, the period was extended for another 12 months to March 15, 2024.
As of August 20, 2023, more than 1,500 Special Ukraine Visas have been granted. About 720 people have traveled to New Zealand on this visa, taking into account the number of those who have left this country and re-entered. In addition, nearly 340 visa holders are at present in New Zealand.
In order to gain residence, visa holders will only be required to provide a limited medical certificate with normal character as well, and identity checks are still necessary.
An NZD 1200 residency visa application fee will apply to those who apply through the Special Ukraine Residency pathway. Still, applicants will not be subject to the Immigration Levy.
In order to maximize accessibility, applicants are required to sit English language tests or have access to suitable funds.
