The United States and Colombia have reached an agreement that prevents the introduction of visa suspension sanctions on Colombia, as recently warned by the President of the United States, Donald Trump.
Trump said that he would impose visa restrictions on Colombia after its government rejected two flights carrying migrants. However, through a statement from the White House, Colombia agreed to accept the migrants, VisaGuide.World reports.
The Government of Colombia has agreed to all of President Trump’s terms, including the unrestricted acceptance of all illegal aliens from Colombia returned from the United States, including on U.S. military aircraft, without limitation or delay.
In the statement, the White House also said that draft orders introducing sanctions on Colombia would be held in reserve and not signed unless Colombia fails to honour the recently reached agreement.
Today’s events make clear to the world that America is respected again. President Trump … expects all other nations of the world to fully cooperate in accepting the deportation of their citizens illegally present in the United States.
On Sunday, January 26, the US President said it would impose several sanctions on Colombia in response to Colombia’s decision not to accept two flights with migrants. Trump considered the measures necessary after the decision of the President of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, posed a risk to United States national security.
These measures are just the beginning. We will not allow the Colombian Government to violate its legal obligations with regard to the acceptance and return of the Criminals they forced into the United States.
Colombia Rejected US Migrant Flights, Saying Migrants Must Be Treated With Dignity
On Sunday, January 26, the President of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, through his X account, said that his Government won’t accept flights with migrants deported from the US until the administration of Trump creates a protocol that treats them with dignity.
Petro also posted videos of migrants reportedly deported to Brazil. These migrants were walking on a tarmac with restraints on their hands and feet.
A migrant is not a criminal and must be treated with the dignity that a human being deserves. That is why I returned the US military planes that were carrying Colombian migrants.
Witness at the Border report revealed that for a period from 2020 to 2024, Colombia received a total of 475 deportation flights from the US. It was ranked fifth behind Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico and El Salvador. Last year alone, it accepted 124 deportation flights, as reported by the Voice of America.
