In addition, the share of the total number of Indian students studying abroad surged from 11.8 percent to a total of 21 percent last year, according to the Open Doors Report 2022.

The report also noted that foreign student numbers pursuing higher education in the US increased from 9.14 lakh in 2020-21 to 9.48 lakh in 2021-22.

The following six states welcomed the largest number of Indian students who chose the US to pursue their higher education:

  • New York
  • California
  • Texas
  • Illinois
  • Massachusetts
  • Arizona

New York also received the most significant number of Indian students in 2021 as well, followed by California (20,106), Texas (19,382), Massachusetts (16,407), Illinois (12,209) and Arizona (8,345). This accounts for 49.56 percent of the 199,182 students in India pursuing higher education in the US.

Open Doors Report 2022 also revealed that India outpaced China when it comes to the number of students sent to the US.

Similar conclusions were also reached by the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement in its annual report. It revealed that India sent 64,300 students to America last year, while China sent 24,796.

The report noted that the number of students from China and India made Asia the most popular continent of origin. Mentioning the decrease from the calendar year 2020 to 2021, the report emphasized that fewer students from China chose the US to study last year compared to 2021 (24,796), while the number of Indian students increased( 64,300).
