The Thai government has recently launched the Destination Thailand Visa (DTV), a scheme dedicated particularly to digital nomads, freelancers, and remote workers.
This visa type allows its holders to stay in Thailand for 180 days per visit while working remotely for companies or clients abroad, VisaGuide.World reports.
As further explained, the Destination Thailand Visa is a multiple-entry visa valid for five years. The new visa, priced at 10,000 baht (about US$280), can be extended once for a maximum of 180 days by paying an extra 10,000 baht.
In addition to the categories mentioned above, the DTV scheme is available to eligible individuals engaged in cultural and certain activities who wish to temporarily stay in Thailand. Moreover, DTV holders can bring their partners and dependent children under 20 to Thailand.
Who Is Eligible to Apply for a Destination Thailand Visa?
Those intending to apply for a Destination Thailand Visa must be at least 20 years old and show financial proof of 500,000 baht (US$ 13,900) during their stay in Thailand.
In addition to the relevant identification documents, applicants are also required to present a work contract or certificate in their country or a professional portfolio demonstrating their digital nomad, remote worker, foreign talent, or freelancer status.
As further noted, DTV holders are not entitled to work for Thai companies or clients. If they want to work for a Thai employer, foreigners must apply for a Thai work permit in accordance with the current regulations.
Interested applicants are encouraged to check the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs official website for detailed information about availability and requirements.
New Initiative Aim to Enhance Tourism Industry
By implementing the new policy, Thai authorities aim to enhance the country’s tourism sector, among other things.
In addition to the DTV, Thailand has introduced longer visa stays for remote workers, tourists, postgraduate students, and retirees to increase tourism.
According to the data revealed by the Thai Ministry of Tourism and Sports, the country welcomed over 28 million visitors in 2023. Most of the tourists came from Malaysia (4.5 million), China (3.5 million), South Korea (1.7 million), India (1.6 million) and Russia (1.5 million).
However, authorities aim to attract more tourists this year. According to previous reports, Thailand anticipates welcoming 40 million internationals by the end of 2024. Meanwhile, during the first five months of 2024, Thailand recorded 14.3 million visitors.
