Morocco and the Republic of Azerbaijan have signed a comprehensive agreement on the exemption of visas for holders of ordinary passports of both countries.
Citizens of both countries with valid ordinary passports can now travel for free between Morocco and Azerbaijan for tourism purposes. Such a move aims to strengthen tourism and foster closer ties between these two nations, VisaGuide.World reports.
The agreement was signed during the 15th Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Summit in Banjul, The Gambia. In addition, the signing ceremony was held on the sidelines of the summit attended by Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita and his counterpart from Azerbaijan, Jeyhoun Bayramov.
Following their bilateral meeting, MFA Nasser Bourita and his Azerbaijani counterpart, Mr Jeyhun Bayramov, proceeded to the signing of an agreement on visa exemption for holders of ordinary passports between the government of Morocco and the government of Azerbaijan.
Minister Bourita also wanted to hold meetings with other foreign ministers who were participating in the Islamic Summit. Thus, officials from Yemen, Nigeria, Brunei, Gabon, Mali, Gambia, Senegal, Mauritania, Türkiye, Sudan, and Burkina Faso were expected to discuss important issues about strengthening bilateral ties and exploring areas of common interest.
Morocco’s E-Visa System Aims to Boost Tourism Industry
Since January of last year, Moroccan authorities have issued electronic visas for Azerbaijan, including the following countries:
- India
- Guatemala
- Jordan
The decision came as part of the Moroccan government’s effort to boost the tourism industry by welcoming more internationals and promoting the North African state as a preferred destination for tourism and business.
Morocco Allows Foreign Citizens to Stay in the Country for 30 Days Within 180 Days
Moreover, the Morocco eVisa is a single-entry visa that allows foreigners to stay for 30 days from the date of their arrival in Morocco, while they will have to enter Morocco within 180 days after the visa issuance.
Based on the VisaGuide Passport Index, the Moroccan passport ranks 129th worldwide as of May 2024. As a result, Moroccan citizens can move freely in 42 countries around the world. However, Moroccan passport holders must apply for a visa in advance to enter the remaining countries.
According to the same source, as for Azerbaijan, starting from this month, its passport is ranked 123rd in the world. Thus, citizens of this country can travel to 37 countries without a visa. On the other hand, visa applications are essential for the remaining countries.
