The World Health Organization (WHO) declared Mpox (Monkeypox) a global health emergency for the second time in two years last week, reflecting the severe escalation of the outbreak.
Mpox spreads through close contact with infected people or animals. The virus can be transmitted through contact with skin lesions, skin-to-skin contact, and by being near an infected person. In Africa, over 14,000 Mpox cases and 524 deaths have been reported recently, VisaGuide.World reports.
These Are the Measures That Pakistan, Indonesia & China Have Taken
The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is experiencing its worst outbreak, with cases up 160 percent and deaths rising 19 percent compared to last year.
Various countries are tightening their border controls and health measures in response to this escalating crisis. Border Health Services Pakistan has recently called for heightened monitoring and protective measures to curb the spread of Mpox. Officials are being advised to monitor travelers and implement rigorous health checks closely.
At the same time, the Indonesian Health Ministry has introduced stringent health screening protocols for foreign visitors. As a result, travelers must complete forms disclosing their medical history and recent travel activities upon entry. To bolster early detection, the Ministry has designated 12 state laboratories nationwide to monitor and identify potential Mpox cases rapidly.
Chinese authorities are also enforcing strict travel restrictions on individuals showing symptoms of Mpox. Enhanced airport surveillance measures have been implemented to isolate and test affected travelers. All individuals with symptoms such as fever, headache, muscle pain, or rash should report their condition upon entry. These measures will remain in force for six months.
Additional Countries Strengthen Mpox Prevention Measures
Following the situation, three other countries that are also stepping up their efforts to prevent further spread of the virus are as follows:
- South Africa has launched a new airport screening initiative to identify and address potential Mpox cases among arriving travelers. This proactive measure is part of the country’s broader strategy to enhance early detection and containment of the virus.
- Kenya has introduced testing procedures for travelers entering the country to identify Mpox cases and prevent their spread. Although only mild cases have been detected thus far, these measures are crucial for effectively monitoring and managing the outbreak.
- Nigeria has implemented a mandatory declaration process for travelers heading to specific African regions. Travelers must complete a declaration form, which can be submitted at the airport or online, to aid in tracking and controlling Mpox transmission.
