US Will Deport Immigrants on Student Visas to Protect National Security

Key Takeaways

  • US politicians want to ban Chinese immigrants on student visas.
  • Vice-President clarified that any immigrant coming to the US on a student visa can be deported if their presence in the country threatens national security.
  • JD Vance also argues that rich foreign students are taking spots at top-ranked American universities, implying that elite universities are prioritizing financial gains over merit in admissions.

Immigrants on student visas living in the United States could face deportation as the new government intensifies efforts to reduce the number of irregular immigrants in the country.

In an interview, US Vice-President JD Vance pointed out that deportation numbers are expected to increase, as the mass deportations will carry on and could impact immigrants on study visas whose stay is not in the best interest of the US, VisaGuide.World reports.

I think we’ll certainly see some people who get deported on student visas if we determine that it’s not in the best interest of the United States to have them in our country. I don’t know how high that number is going to be, but you’re going to see more people.

US Vice-President JD Vance

In addition to the Vice-President talking about more stringent measures, the House Republicans are also looking into possibilities to make it more difficult for Chinese nationals to come to the US, as a new bill aiming at banning this nationality group from obtaining student visas.

US Policymakers Want to Ban Chinese Nationals From Obtaining Student Visas

According to Fox News, the bill that aims at banning Chinese nationals from getting student visas, is still being circulated for co-sponsors.

As Fox News Digital was told, people who are expected to support the bill that was initiated by Riley Moore, a Republican from West Virginia,  include Andy Ogles, a Republican from Tennessee, Scott Perry, a Republican from Pennsylvania, and Brandon Gill, Republican from Texas.

With thousands of foreign students coming to the US every year, Moore argues that changes are needed to prevent immigrants with student visas from taking advantage of the system.

Every year, we allow nearly 300,000 Chinese nationals to come to the US on student visas. We’ve literally invited the CCP to spy on our military, steal our intellectual property, and threaten national security. Just last year, the FBI charged five Chinese nationals here on student visas after they were caught photographing joint US-Taiwan live-fire military exercises. This cannot continue.

According to Moore, China is exploiting the US student visa program, and the bill initiated by him is cited as ‘‘Stop CCP VISAs Act of 2025”.

In addition to protecting national security, JD Vance also accused foreign students of taking spots at the best universities, often leaving American students to pick other universities after failing to make it to the top-ranked institutions.

He said that a lot of these foreign students pay full tuition, indicating they pay tuition without financial aid, which implies that foreign students at top-ranked universities are rich and secure spots at highly-ranked universities instead of “well-qualified middle-class American kids from the heartland who don’t get a spot in these universities because some Chinese oligarch, who is paying $100,000 a year takes up that spot”.
