The United States President Joe Biden has announced that the US has closed its airspace to all Russian flights due to the latter’s invasion of Ukraine.
The President said that Moscow would be weaker by the end of its war against Ukraine while announcing the decision, VisaGuide.World reports.
Biden has stressed that the US is imposing “powerful sanctions” on Russia that are cutting its banks from the international financial system and “chocking” its access to technological imports.
The US president has thrown accusations towards Russia’s President Vladimir, saying that he alone is to blame for Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
“Tonight, I’m announcing that we will join our allies in closing off American airspace to all Russian flights, further isolating Russia and adding an additional squeeze on their economy. He has no idea what’s coming,” he pointed out in this regard. On February 24, following the order of Russian President Vladimir Putin, Russia attacked Ukraine in what was called by the Kremlin a “special military operation” after months of escalating tensions. Soon after, a large number of European countries started to impose sanctions and other restrictions. Neighboring countries of Ukraine, Poland, Romania, and Moldova supported the latter by banning all flights from Russian airspace. Poland’s decision was announced by Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki.
“I have ordered the preparation of a resolution that will lead to the closure of the airspace over Poland to Russian airlines,” he pointed out in this regard.Baltic countries, Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia, also banned Russian airlines from their airspace, calling on other countries to impose similar measures.
“We invite all EU countries to do the same. There is no place for planes of the aggressor state in democratic skies. #StandWithUkraine,” Prime Minister of Estonia Kaja Kallas pointed out in this regard.Due to the current situation in Ukraine, the block has banned hundreds of Russians from entering its territory. In addition, the EU has frozen the assets of Russians in the Member States, banned state-owned media, Russia Today, and Sputnik while confirming that all Member States would unanimously ban Russian aircraft from operating in their airspace. Such a decision was confirmed by the European Union Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen, during a meeting held on Sunday.
“First, we are shutting down the EU airspace for Russians. We are proposing a prohibition on all Russian-owned, Russian-registered, or Russian-controlled aircraft. These aircraft will no longer be able to land in, take off, or overfly the territory of the EU. This will apply to any plane owned, chartered, or otherwise controlled by a Russian legal or natural person,” von der Leyen pointed out in this regard. In addition, she stressed that the ban would also include private jets of Russian oligarchs.
