A multiple-entry Schengen visa allows applicants to enter and exit the Schengen area multiple times within the visa’s validity period. This means that you can enter the Schengen area as many times as you like. A multiple-entry visa is indicated by ‘MULT’ under ‘the number of entries’, meaning multiple.
Multiple-entry visas are issued in order to lessen the administrative burden of the consulates of the Schengen Area member states and to facilitate, as well as speed up, the process of application and travel for frequent and regular visitors. Therefore, applicants who are known for their integrity and reliability benefit greatly from this type of visa.
Types of Multiple-Entry Schengen Visas
The number of times you can enter the Schengen Area depends on the type of visa you hold. There are three types of Schengen visas when it comes to validity.
- Double-entry visa. A double-entry visa allows its holder to enter the Schengen area two times within the visa’s validity period. This means you can enter, exit, and enter one more time before your visa expires.
- One-year-multiple-entry visa. A one-year multiple-entry visa allows its holder to enter the Schengen area for up to 180 days in a year, as long as they do not stay more than 90 days in a period of 180 days.
- Five-year-multiple-entry visa. A five-year multiple entry visa is issued to applicants who have previously used a multiple entry visa for at least two (2) years over the past three (3) years.

Tips for a Successful Multiple Entry Schengen Visa Application

- Provide a well-justified reason for multiple entries. When you are applying for a multiple-entry visa, it means that you wish to enter the Schengen area several times. Therefore, you must have a strong and valid reason to do so. Make sure to carefully lay out your reasons in a thoughtful and reasonable manner. For example, if you are visiting for business purposes, you may explain the reason why you need to exit and enter several times, e.g., you need to enter the Schengen zone, meet with a client, go back to your home country and enter the Schengen zone again. Or, perhaps you may need to meet with different clients in different countries within the Schengen zone.
- Submit a strong travel history. A strong travel history significantly increases your chances of being granted a visa. This proves that you have always followed immigration policies and that you won’t be overstaying or threatening any immigration policy or law.
- Provide complete and accurate documentation. The most important step to be granted the multiple-entry visa is to provide all necessary documentation. Make sure that the documents you submit are accurate and complete. You must not skip or leave out any documents and undermine their significance.
