Visa requirements for Hong Kong citizens change depending on which country you want to visit or why you want to visit that specific country.
However, Hong Kong’s passport, otherwise known as an HKSAR passport, is ranked as the 19th in terms of mobility, according to the Henley Passport Index, which means that there are plenty of countries where you can go visa-free.
As of this recent year, Hong Kong citizens can enter visa-free (get a visa on arrival or apply for an eVisa), 170 countries and territories.

Countries Where HKSAR Passport Holders Cannot Visit
Since 2015, Hong Kong citizens are not allowed to enter Ascension Island. However, now due to Covid, a few countries have banned Hong Kong citizens which include:
- North Korea
- Kuwait
Can I Enter Mainland China Visa-Free With a Hong Kong Passport?
To enter Mainland China with a Hong Kong passport, you need a Mainland Travel Permit (MTP). This permit will allow you to stay in China indefinitely until the permit expires, but this is valid only for short visits, and for tourist purposes.
If you want to work or study in Mainland China, you must have a valid work permit or student visa in addition to your MTP.
Does Taiwan Allow Visa-Free Entry for Hong Kong Citizens?
If you are a permanent resident in Hong Kong, or a citizen, to enter Taiwan, you need a temporary entry and stay permit before you depart. You are eligible to apply for the permit if you intend to stay for no more than 30 days.

If you hold a valid APEC Business Travel Card (ABTC) issued by Hong Kong, you can visit the following countries visa-free:

The APEC card is a travel document that is issued to citizens that belong to the countries that have signed an economic agreement- this includes Hong Kong as well.
If you hold an APEC Busines Travel Card, you enjoy more benefits including:
- The ability to enter visa-free, or without a permit to other countries that belong to the APEC agreement (excluding the US and Canada)*.
- The ability to participate in legitimate business activities.
- Fast-tracking the process of border crossing between APEC countries.
- The ability to schedule a visa interview for the US as soon as possible.
The US and Canada, are transitional members of the economic agreement, and for that reason, you will most likely be required to apply for a business visa or any similar visa, if you plan to conduct business in those countries.
