Complete guide to the worldwide pilgrimage visas, the general requirements, the standard application process, and FAQs

More than 250 million people go on pilgrimage every year. There are several different types of religious journeys, and some can be domestic while others are international. For international pilgrimages, visitors need to apply for a specific visitor visa, referred to as a pilgrimage visa.

What Is a Pilgrimage Visa?

A pilgrimage visa is an official travel document that allows you to complete religious travels by visiting holy sites in foreign countries. This type of visa is only issued by those countries where religious journeys can happen, and to qualify, you must belong to a specific religion (Islam, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, etc.)

Pilgrimage Visa Guidelines

Keep in mind the following rules when you receive your pilgrimage visa:

  • You can only visit the holy sites on your pilgrimage.
  • You can only travel with the group you entered the country.
  • You are allowed to stay only until you complete your pilgrimage.
  • You cannot work or do business on a pilgrimage visa.

Pilgrimage Visa by Country

Here are some of the countries that provide pilgrimage visas:

  • Saudi Arabia Umrah and Hajj Visa.
  • Pakistani Pilgrimage Visa.
  • India Pilgrim Visa.
  • China Pilgrim Visa.

Saudi Arabia Umrah and Hajj Visa

You can apply for an Umrah or a Hajj visa if you are a Muslim pilgrim and want to perform either pilgrimage, i.e., Umrah or Hajj. Saudi Arabia regulates the visa process, and you must apply through an approved travel agency— your pilgrimage visa will be valid for two weeks.

Pakistani Pilgrimage Visa

The Pakistani Pilgrimage visa is an online permit that allows you to visit holy areas in Pakistan. Nationals of 191 countries are eligible for this visa, and if you are an Indian national who is living in a third country, you also qualify for the visa.

Please note that even if you apply online, you must visit a Pakistani embassy/consulate no later than two days after you submit your application— make sure you check your email regularly to receive the instructions on how to proceed.

India Pilgrim Visa

This visa is only issued for a group of people (more than 10), so you need to apply through a visa agency in an organized visit. You and your group can visit all the important religious places in India during your stay, but you cannot go on separate visits from your group.

China Pilgrim Visa

You can now apply for a Chinese pilgrimage visa if you are an Indian Hindu undertaking the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra pilgrimage. However, you must submit a group application to qualify for the visa— no individual applications are accepted.
