Citizens of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland will be eligible to travel to Ukraine visa-free for another year, despite leaving the EU.
According to the latest decision of the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, the visa-free plan will help the citizens of the UK to enter into Ukraine and transit through at least until the end of January 2021.
The “regime” will be revived on a temporary basis from 31 January 2020, to 30 January 2021, the President has confirmed.
“To introduce visa-free entry into Ukraine and transit through the territory of Ukraine for the citizens of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland from January 31, 2020, to January 30, 2021, if their stay in Ukraine does not exceed 90 days for 180 days”, a statement published by the official website of Ukraine’s President.
But the latest reports added that this one-year extension can be extended further, even though it cannot be infinite.
The presidential decree also says that the move is designed to facilitate the partnership between Ukraine and Britain.
Visa’s liberalization process of Ukraine with the European Union, started on September 1, 2005, when the country abolished visas for all EU citizens. In June 2017, Ukraine received visa-free entry to the countries of the Schengen Area, which does not include the U.K.
However, as an EU member, the UK also benefited from visa-free movement to Ukraine under this decision.
For 15 years, Ukraine has been a visa-free country for British citizens, which is now considering an inequality, because Ukrainians need a visa to visit Britain. Above that Britain’s visas are considered one of the most difficult visas to receive.
According to Europe Without Barriers, an organization the activities of which are among others aimed at facilitating and promoting the human right for freedom of movement, Ukraine ranked third among European countries by the number of applications for a British visa in 2017.
In addition, the British Ambassador to Ukraine, Melinda Simmons says that Ukrainians have a high rate of visa application approval, as according to statistics, Ukrainians get 98% of British visas on time.
“Most of the applications for visits are handled without problems, and the Embassy will work with the UK Visa Application Center so that people get visas on time,” she asserts, pointing out that Britain is not planning to introduce reciprocal visa-free travel for Ukrainian citizens.
