If you switch flights to a Czech airport while traveling to a third country, you may need a Czech Republic transit visa. However, in most cases, if you do not leave the airport’s international transit area, you do not need a transit visa.

Only nationals from a shortlist of countries need a visa to transit in the Czech Republic even if they do not leave the transit area.

Do I Need A Czech Republic Transit Visa? 

You need a visa to transit to a Czech airport if you are from one of the following countries:

  • Afghanistan
  • Bangladesh
  • The Democratic Republic of the Congo
  • Eritrea
  • Ethiopia
  • Ghana
  • Iran
  • Iraq
  • Nigeria
  • Pakistan
  • Somalia
  • Sri Lanka
  • Chad
  • Egypt
  • India
  • Kyrgyzstan
  • Lebanon
  • Libya
  • Mali
  • Mauritania
  • Niger
  • South Sudan
  • Sudan
  • Syria
  • Turkey
  • Turkmenistan
  • Yemen
  • Palestinians

If they do not leave the airport’s transit zone, citizens from countries not listed above do not need a visa to transit in the Czech Republic. 

Important: Sometimes, you may have to leave the airport’s transit area to change flights. In that case, you do need a visa. This is why it is always important to check with the airline beforehand (or with a Czech embassy) so you are not left stranded with no way to travel onward.

Exemptions From the Czech Transit Visa

Even if you are from a country that typically requires a visa to transit in the Czech Republic (as listed above: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, DR Congo, etc.), you are exempt in the following cases:

  • You are a family member of someone who lives and is a citizen of EU/EEA/Switzerland.
  • You are a citizen with a valid visa from the USA, Japan, and Canada.
  • You have a valid visa or a residence permit from the Schengen area, EU, or EEA.
  • You are the holder of a diplomatic passport.
  • You are a holder of a uniform visa, a residence permit given to you by a Member State, or a long-stay visa.
  • You are the holder of a residence permit issued by Canada, Japan, the USA, Andorra, or San Marino.

What Are The Requirements For A Czech Republic Transit Visa?

If you want to apply for a transit visa for the Czech Republic, you must submit these documents:

  • Your passport. The passport must be valid for three months after your return date and must have at least two blank pages.
  • Your application form. You must fill out the application form with all the required information and sign it. Do not leave any blank spaces.
  • Passport-size photo. The photo must follow the Schengen visa photo guidelines.
  • Your biometric data. The applicant must submit their picture and fingerprints to the consulate or a visa center. Children that are younger than 12  years are exempted from the fingerprints requirement.
  • Your application payment fee. You must pay your application fee when submitting your application. If your visa is refused, the embassy will not refund your money.
  • Proof of flight ticket to your final destination. This document is needed to prove that you will not be entering any other Member State of the Schengen Area during your stay at the airport.

How To Apply For A Czech Republic Transit Visa?

To apply for a Czech Republic Transit visa, you must follow these steps:

  1. Contact the nearest Czech Republic embassy. You must contact the nearest Czech Republic embassy in your country to help you submit your application.
  2. Fill out your application form. Download the application form online and make sure you fill it with all the required information.
  3. Pay for the application fee. After you fill out the application form, pay the application fee to finish the whole process of applying. 
  4. Submit all the required documents. Make sure you collect and submit your documents.
  5. Wait for your visa response. After applying for a visa, wait for a response from the embassy in your email or SMS.

How Much Does A Czech Republic Transit Visa Cost?

The Transit Visa fee for the Czech Republic is:

  • €80 for adults.
  • €40 for children between 6-12 age.
  • €35 for citizens of Armenia, Russia, and Azerbaijan. 

The Transit Visa for the Czech Republic is free for: 

  • Children from 0-6 years.
  • Citizens with family members who live in the EU.
  • Students, teachers who plan to travel for personal training or studying purposes.
  • Researchers are traveling for scientific research.
  • Participants or representatives seminars, conferences, sports, cultural or educational events organized by non-profit organizations. 

For How Long Is The Czech Republic Transit Visa Valid?

The transit visa of the Czech Republic is only valid for one or two entries, and you can only stay in the transit zone until your next flight. You cannot enter the Czech Republic or any other country in the Schengen Area, and you cannot leave the airport.

How Long Does It Take To Get A Czech Republic Transit Visa?

It can take 7 to 15 business days to respond to your transit visa. In some cases, the processing time can be extended to a month. You will receive an email or SMS from the embassy with your response.
