Barbados is one of the few countries that has created its own digital nomad visa.

The Barbados digital nomad visa (officially called the Barbados Welcome Stamp Visa) was introduced on June 30th, 2020. At the moment, it is ranked 10th as one of the best digital nomad visas in the world.

  • Tax matters. As a digital nomad in Barbados, you are not required to pay income taxes. Moreover, employers of digital nomads are not required to register or have a payroll in Barbados.

Requirements for Barbados Digital Nomad Visa

The list of the documents required for the Barbados nomad visa is:

  • Filled out application form. Application forms can be filled out online, and you can find the link here.  
  • Valid passport. The validity of the passport needs to be at least six months. In the online application, you need to have a copy of the bio-data page and all the other applicants in order to upload them. 
  • A passport-size photo.  The dimensions of the photo must be 2 x 2 inches (51 x 51 mm). 
  • Birth certificate.
  • Evidence of relationship to dependents. If you have dependents, you have to submit a birth certificate, marriage certificate, or adoption documents for each family member, as applicable. 
  • Proof of annual income ($50,000 annually).
  • Proof of health insurance. For traveling to Barbados, you need international health insurance designed for digital nomads. Private health insurance is available in Barbados as well.
  • Proof of clean criminal record. The proof of a clean criminal record you can get at your local police department where you live.
  • Entry visa (if applicable)

How to Apply for a Barbados Digital Nomad Visa?

You have to apply for a Barbados digital nomad visa online, at the official website. The application process is as follows: 

  1. Gather all the required documents. The first step is gathering all the documents that are required to apply for a Barbados digital nomad visa. The list of the documents needed is under “Requirements for Barbados Digital Nomad Visa”.
  2. Fill in the application. The next step is to complete the application form. Barbados has an easy process for filling out the application. It is online, and you can find it here
  3. Wait for approval. After filling in the application, you have to wait up to 5 working days. You will get an email confirming the approval or denial. 
  4. Pay the fees. The Barbados digital nomad visa costs are $2,000 for an individual and $3,000 for a couple or family. They are not refundable and must be paid after approval. Fees need to be paid within 28 days of the approval. 
  5. Travel to Barbados. After paying the fees, you only have to pack your bags and book a ticket. Remember, you have to arrive within 12 months of the approval. Barbados digital nomad visa is valid from the day of arrival.

It is also important to mention that you may also have to apply for an entry visa before traveling to the country, which can be done at any of Barbados’ missions and consulates overseas. The fee for a single entry visa is $107, and for a multiple entry visa is $211.

How Long Can I Work in Barbados as a Digital Nomad?

The validity of the Barbados digital nomad visa is one year. This visa is valid from the date of arrival. Moreover, you can travel inside and outside Barbados during that 12-month period.

Filling in the application form takes only fifteen minutes. The application takes 48 hours to process, and within five working days, you will receive an answer via email whether it is confirmed or denied.  

How Much Does the Barbados Digital Nomad Visa Cost?

The Barbados digital nomad visa fees are as follows:

  • $2,000 for an individual
  • $3,000 for a couple or family 

The fees are not refundable and must be paid after approval. Fees need to be paid within 28 days of the approval. In addition, if you must have an entry visa, you have to pay $107 to $211 depending on the number of entries you require. 

Paying Taxes as a Digital Nomad in Barbados

People in Barbados are required to pay taxes according to their taxable status. A resident that is settled in Barbados is required to pay taxes on their worldwide income. A resident that is not settled has to pay income taxes that come from Barbados and amounts remitted to Barbados. Moreover, a non-resident is taxed on income that comes from Barbados only. The usual income tax rates are 12.5% on the first $25,000 of income tax and 28.5% afterward. 

For the next 12 months, you will not have to pay income taxes as a digital nomad in Barbados. You are deemed a non-resident in Barbados and continue to pay taxes in your home country. Moreover, employers of digital nomads are not required to register or have a payroll in Barbados.
